Sex workers in Serenje yesterday stormed the District commissioner Charles Mwelwa’s office demanding to be addressed saying they would not access the empowerment funds.
They told the DC that they wanted to be given a portion of empowerment funds.
The sex workers said like any other citizens, they were also supposed to benefit from the measures the government had put in place to fight unemployment.
They said when it came to applying for loans, they were always sidelined. Some of them said they lacked capital to start businesses, a situation which forced them to engage in prostitution. They called on government to make it easier for people with business plans to access financial help.
Mr mwelwa said that the government didnt not regard them as sex workers but as women. He said the government had put in place a number or programs aimed at empowering women. He said government did not encourage illicit sex as it increased the the spread of HIV/AIDS in society.
Mr Mwelwa advised them to come up with innovative projects.
